Julie Ocken

I’m Julie! i’ve been super active my whole life, starting as a young kid doing gymnastics before i found myself in the pool. i swam competitively through D1 college, and being at or in the water is still my happy place. 

i found PDX Strength when Jocelyn and Laura were doing bootcamp classes in the park — i’m legit OG! i probably “officially” started going to bootcamp classes at the gym in like 2016, but was too scared to touch a barbell until about 2017. since then i’ve found a good balance of movement for me is in GS&C-style classes, yoga, swimming, and also getting outdoors as much as possible. i did my CrossFit L1 training in 2023 and then got my L2 in early 2025. i’ve met so many people that i now consider some of my best friends through athletics and movement, and i feel fortunate to be part of the PDX Strength community now both as a trainer and always as a student athlete! i love helping folks progress in movements, find the right scaling, and work on skills and strength that make sense for each person’s individual goals.

outside of the gym and my work at the City of Portland, you can find me hiking, paddle boarding, camping, writing, reading, cooking, watching a ton of sports… and occasionally sitting still.
